It is March 2026 and for this new spring month the Spirit of ‘76 theme is Religion. We have covered Stoicism and History, both relatively neutral topics compared to what’s in store for March. The topic of Religion has the potential for controversy, but it’s the goal of the Spirit of ‘76 Project to focus on its relevance to government, politics, and the founding of the United States.
Religion is a set of beliefs, values, rituals, and moral guidelines that people follow in order to give meaning or purpose to their lives. It often involves belief in and worship of a higher power, such as God, multiple gods, or supernatural forces. Religions may also provide a framework for understanding the origins of life, the universe, and the afterlife. They often influence personal identity, community structures, cultural practices, and ethical norms.
Religion in America holds a very significant role in shaping its society, politics, culture, and overall life. America is characterized by a high degree of religious diversity and freedom thanks to the first amendment to the United States Constitution. This diversity includes a wide range of faiths including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and many others. Religious faith and observance in the US are comparatively high among developed countries, impacting the country’s social and political life. From a historical point of view, various religious and moral beliefs have been influential in social movements like the Civil Rights Movement, Women’s Suffrage, and others. Thus, religion in America is diverse, influential, and directly tied into freedom of expression and belief, shaping many aspects of American life and public policy.
“The Flag and the Cross” is a song that is both deeply personal and relevant to religious freedom in the United States. This eloquent hard rock track endorses the separation of church and state by telling the story of my ancestor, Governor John Endecott. It’s a historical allegory and a cautionary tale about a forgotten founding father who literally cut the cross from the flag, symbolically separating the church from the state, while also embodying an archetypal example of the perils to spiritual conscience when the state establishes a religion.
